Discover The Gateway to Happiness in the Present

Discover The Gateway to Happiness in the Present

Hello, my dear reader friend! Today we will explore the “Art of Gratitude”, its importance, and how to cultivate it.

I will start with a quote by Aesop, a legendary figure in ancient Greek literature who is traditionally credited with a collection of fables.

"Gratitude turns what we have into enough."

What does gratitude mean to me?

I perceive the concept of “gratitude” as a verb. Because a verb describes an action, it strengthens the concept. It’s alive, it’s dynamic, it moves, it feels, and it builds. Gratitude is the act of being thankful and appreciative of the positive aspects of life. It involves recognizing and expressing thankfulness for the good things, experiences, and people in our lives. Actively practicing gratitude improves our well-being and a positive outlook. Overall, gratitude involves focusing on what we currently have, encouraging a sense of contentment and happiness.

Gratitude acts as a compass that directs our attention away from what we lack or desire and guides us toward what we already have “NOW”. It channels our attention to the wonderful things we have in the present. By acknowledging and appreciating the positive aspects of our lives, we unlock the door to happiness in the present. This shift in focus allows us to savor the richness of each moment, fostering a sense of contentment that transcends the constant pursuit of more.

If you have read my book, 'Your Upward Journey: It’s Easier Than You Think!,' you will already be familiar with the story I’m about to share. One of my cherished delights was strolling on the beach, feeling the gentle sand on my bare feet. I treasured the sensation of my soles embracing the earth's touch from heel to toe with each step.

As you may know, I faced the life-changing challenge of becoming a paraplegic during my teenage years. Once I became a paraplegic, I lost the sensation in my feet, and, of course, the ability to walk on the beach and experience that cherished feeling as it once was.

Unless a miracle happens, it is a reality I must accept. I have no control over it. I choose then not to dwell on this particular lack and channel my gratitude toward my blessings today. The accident, which caused life-changing consequences, was instrumental in shaping who I am today. My journey up to this point, replete with other cherished delights, is too wonderful to leave me parked in the past. I have a wonderful family, friends, and a profession that I love. I have never lacked any material things, and living with a disability has equipped me with a strategic mindset that keeps me determined, focused, and moving forward regardless. Now, I ask you, can you see how 'strolling on the beach' became a small part of my life when I lay the lack and gain side by side?

OK enough of Patu. Let’s talk about three tips to practice embracing Gratitude as a way of life:

Tip #1: Start Our Day with Gratitude: Begin each morning by reflecting on the things we are grateful for. Whether it's the warmth of the sunlight streaming through our window or the support of loved ones, taking a moment to express gratitude sets a positive tone for the day.

Tip #2: Practice Mindfulness: Living in the present requires cultivating mindfulness – the art of being fully present in the current moment. Turn off your electronics! Engage in activities with full attention, savoring the sights, sounds, and sensations around us. Mindfulness not only enhances our appreciation for the present but also helps us alleviate stress and anxiety.

Tip #3: Express Gratitude Regularly: Let's not keep our gratitude to ourselves. Express it to those who contribute positively to our lives. Whether it's a friend, family member, or colleague, letting them know we appreciate their presence or actions strengthens relationships and creates a positive ripple effect. Acts of kindness and gratitude create a harmonious environment, clean the energy around us, and ultimately nurture inner happiness.

Simply put my dear reader friend, the art of gratitude is a transformative force that can significantly impact our well-being. By focusing on the present and acknowledging the abundance in our lives, we unlock the key to a happier and more fulfilling existence. Embrace gratitude, savor the present, and watch as our journeys become smoother, and filled with moments of joy and contentment.

In a world that often encourages us to focus on what we lack, mastering the art of gratitude emerges as a powerful antidote. Cultivating a thankful mindset not only transforms our perspective but also paves the way for a happier and more fulfilling life in the present moment. Let's explore together the profound benefits of embracing gratitude!
